Creative,
unique weddings are a trend in our times. We live in an age when individuality
enjoys expression as never before. As a couple, the wedding is an
opportunity to make public expression of who we are. Vows, written
by ourselves or symbolized in silence; music, from tribal drums to
electric guitars; festive clothing, from leather to lace; food, from
old family recipes to gourmet delicacies... whatever your choice,
it is your own unique style that makes you Mr. and Mrs. One-of-a-Kind.
Traditions are not necessarily legalities. In some counties, the
only legal requirement is a marriage license obtained from the County
Clerk's office and signed by any person you have chosen to witness
the exchanging of vows of your intent to marry. The person who hears
the vows need not be a minister, a judge or other credentialed person
and the vows may be any version of your intent to marry, plus any
other promises and commitments you wish to include. Be each other's
consultant. Once the elements of the wedding have been created by
common interests, explore your ideas. Many chaplains, merchants and
individuals with creative ideas and talents are available and anxious
to free you to make symbolic, custom expressions of yourselves when
wedding planning
The more you take a hand in the wedding, from the vows to the
participation of guests, to the details that symbolize you as a couple
(the setting, dress, music, festivities) the more it is yours to share
as a pair and you will feel that the marriage is for you, rather than
you submitting yourself to marriage. You may choose a basically traditional
wedding or be uniquely creative in your wedding production. This exploratory
process in the details you choose will give you an opportunity to
know and appreciate one another in ways that will enrich and strengthen
the sense of commitment for each one of you.
The choice is yours. Have the courage, fulfill a dream and design
a new tradition; one that bespeaks your own unique combination, your
own "moment in history".
